At dusk, David looks out the window of the synagogue study. Electric lights peppered the darkening cityscape. Memories of watching CSPAN earlier that week flood his mind. I can’t believe it was real. He remembers how flabbergasted he was at its mention of a new Kinder Egg bill. After days of reflecting on this, all he knows for sure is his life is about to turn upside down.
He takes in the pleasure of both the view and having the library to himself now, and turns to the briefcase in front of him. He moves his laptop to the side and takes a book of Tanach from his bag. He opens the book, and a letter falls out. David picks up the letter and sees his father’s writing, “In the final generation, people will not discern evil from goodness, as Isaiah said, ‘He who departs from evil will be considered a fool’.” Sounds like our President.
David turns to the laptop for a moment and sees his news feed. An article about a presidential proclamation catches his eye: “President Renews Education Day Proclamation of Moral Values and Education”. An image at the top of the article shows the President at his desk, flanked by rabbis in suits and fedoras. David recognizes one rabbi as Rabbi Tarfon, an old friend of his father.
The article detailed the President’s recent efforts at promoting moral education. Reading through it, David thought, The President may not be the messiah some hold him to be, but one is not elected by millions through foolishness. He then notices other news articles in his feed comment on the Education Day proclamation and how it is a step in the right direction for the scarce moral education in the U.S. David grips his old multicolored click-pen and thinks through all this, considering what he can do about it with his new powers and the help of other superheroes. “Father, in your name and the name of the Almighty, it’s clear what must be done.”
He picks up his phone and finds Rabbi Tarfon’s number. Thank G-d that Dad sent me Tarfon’s number way back. I hope the number hasn’t changed. He clicks the call button and puts the phone to his ear.
“Hello?”
“Hi, Rabbi. This is Dovid Kester, you knew my father.”
“Ah, your father was Binyomin Kester. Happy that you’ve called, but I can’t talk long.”
“I’ll keep it short. You’re involved in the efforts to promote moral education in the U.S., right? You were featured in pictures of the Education Day event at the White House.”
“I am involved, absolutely.”
“Can I help you expand moral education in this country?”
“Sure. I’ll put you in touch with my assistant and she’ll help find you a way to volunteer.”
“But, rabbi, there’s more to it.”
“What do you mean?”
“Keep this between us, but my father came to me in a dream last night and said Hashem is giving me powers.”
